Our Markham Veterinarians Help You Keep Your Pets Safe During the Holidays

The holiday season is filled with a lot of excitement. You probably have lots of big plans for gatherings with family and friends, lots of presents to buy, and many special cookie recipes to perfect. Don’t neglect your furry friends in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season! There are many dangers to pets that come with the holidays, and our Markham veterinarians want to help you avoid them.

  • Be aware of tempting decorations. Some decorations, like tinsel, should be avoided entirely because of the danger it can pose to your pet if ingested. The same goes for holiday plants like poinsettias and holly. Glass ornaments and breakable items should be kept out of reach of curious pets to keep them (and your keepsakes) safe.
  • Don’t over indulge your pet. We all tend to gain a few pounds over the holidays, but don’t let your pet do the same. Allowing them to eat table scraps or giving them extra treats during the holidays can lead to weight gain that greatly impacts their over-all health. Rich foods can cause upset digestion, too.
  • Give your pet a quiet space to retreat. Don’t expect your cat or dog to constantly be in the middle of the action if they don’t want to be. Make sure your pet can go into a quiet room by themselves if they need to take a break from the excitement and noise of the holidays. This will decrease their stress levels and keep them from getting aggressive or scared.
