Meet The Ukrainian Levkoy

April 1, 2022

Over the past few weeks, the world has been watching the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and the plight of the millions of civilians caught up in the conflict. Sadly, many innocent animals have also been caught up in the war. Much like us, Ukrainians have animal companions of all shapes and sizes. However, there’s only one Ukrainian cat breed in existence: the Levkoy. A vet talks about this unusual kitty below.

History

The Ukrainian Levkoy is fairly new. A breeder named Elena Biriukova developed the breed by crossing Scottish Folds with hairless Donskoys between 2000 and 2011. In 2005, Fluffy was officially accepted by the ICFA RUI (Rolandus Union International).

Basics

Ironically, the first thing to know about Fluffy is that she isn’t fluffy. Levkoys are a hairless breed, and they have a very distinctive look. Their heads are unusually angular, and their ears are sometimes rounded, like the Scottish Fold’s. Levkoys also have long tails with pointy ends and/or curly whiskers. It’s also worth mentioning that these cats tend to get pretty big!

Purrsonality

Levkoys are very loveable and affectionate, and they get really attached to their humans. These kitties are in fact so sociable that they can get anxious and depressed if left alone for even eight hours. You may want to get your feline pal a buddy, so she doesn’t get lonely. Aside from that, Fluffy is rarely aggressive and very playful. Provide plenty of playtime and toys!

Care

For the most part, Levkoys have the same needs as other cats. However, they are prone to getting chilly, since they don’t have fur. Your pet will likely need sweaters when it’s cold, and will appreciate a thermal or heated bed. And if she’s allowed out, you’ll also need to use sunscreen on your kitty. Ask your vet for care tips.

Health

Levkoys are quite new, so there isn’t much data regarding their long-term health. However, they may be prone to the same conditions their ancestors experienced. Donskoys are at risk of dysplasia and dental issues, while the Scottish Folds may develop cardiomyopathy or kidney issues. Be sure to keep up with Fluffy’s veterinary care needs!

Helping

Many organizations around the world have been stepping up to help the people of Ukraine and their beloved pets. IPAW, in particular, is specifically focused on helping animals. To learn more about them, or maybe make a donation, you can visit their site here.
