T-Rex is an adorable male Yorkshire Terrier x Poodle, who was presented to MVC at 9 weeks of age for evaluation of suspected parvovirus infection.
Canine parvovirus destroys the lining of the digestive tract causing potentially life threatening fluid and protein loss, that requires urgent treatment. It is one of the canine diseases that can be prevented through administration of a series of properly timed vaccinations for both puppies and adults. He had a positive test result reported by the breeder and had developed symptoms of illness (including vomiting, diarrhea and poor appetite) within the first 24 hours of arrival at his new home. Despite their brief ownership, his owners were very attached to him and decided to make the commitment to try to treat him rather than return him to the breeder. Several days of hospitalization for administration of supportive care including intravenous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication, and antibiotics were required. Thanks to his owners’ willingness to treat and the intensive supportive medical care provided by the MVC team, I am happy to say he survived his illness and is now a thriving 4 month old puppy.
