Markham Veterinary Clinic first welcomed Jake to the practice in July of 2012. Jake is a 9-month-old, male, Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle cross, and a much loved family pet.
Jake was first diagnosed with a Giardia infection at 3 months of age. Giardia is sometimes confused with “worms” because they invade the gastrointestinal tract and can cause diarrhea. Giardia is a one-celled parasites classified as protozoa. Most dogs that are infected with Giardia do not have diarrhea or any other signs of illness. When the eggs are found in the stool of a dog without diarrhea, they may be transient finding. However, in puppies and debilitated adult dogs, they may cause severe, watery diarrhea that may be fatal. Jake has had treatment for his parasitic infection and is recovering.
Little Jake has also had a urinary tract infection, which was treated with antibiotics and has fully resolved. Most recently, Jake had a bout of vomiting and diarrhea that necessitated a visit to the after hours emergency clinic. But, with treatment, Jake has once again fully recovered and is back to his mischievous puppy ways.
