We would like to introduce you to our pet of the month, “Nova”, a beautiful 2 year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever.
Nova recently welcomed a baby ‘sister,’ Lily Annabelle into her home with open paws. She is a very friendly girl who unfortunately began to have diarrhea a few months ago. Despite numerous treatments, Nova’s diarrhea kept coming back and when we did further testing, we found out it was because Nova has a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). Normally, the pancreas excretes enzymes into the intestine that help to digest the fats and proteins in our food so they can be absorbed. With EPI, the pancreas does not do this and poor Nova could not absorb her food properly. This caused her to lose weight and have greasy diarrhea and a dull coat. A special blood test was done which revealed that Nova did have EPI and she was started on a special medicine to supplement the enzymes that her pancreas was not producing normally. We were thrilled to work with Nova’s loving parents through this as they did all they could for her. We are happy to report Nova has responded well to treatment. She is having normal bowel movements and is gaining weight. She is now back to chasing bees in the backyard and teaching her new sister the ropes!
