Buddy is a boisterous little dog that comes to see us regularly for his vaccines and examination. His owner made sure to bring in a urine sample to check his urinary health.
The results of his urine test showed microscopic crystals and blood, two warning signs that suggest there may be something causing irritation to his urinary tract. Based on these results, x-rays were taken that showed multiple small stones in his bladder. These stones were not there when Buddy had x-rays last year, so they had formed in less than a years’ time.
After some discussion with Buddy’s owner, we decided to perform surgery to remove all the stones directly from his bladder. Buddy recovered well and is now on a special diet to help prevent any new stones from forming.
Thanks to his owner proactively bringing in urine for testing, we were able to resolve this uncomfortable problem for Buddy before it became more serious. If left undiagnosed, stones can get lodged further down the urinary tract and cause a blockage, preventing urination and causing life-threatening illness.
For the foreseeable future, Buddy will need to stay on a strict prescription urinary diet and have routine urine checks and x-rays to stay on top of any new stone formation. Thankfully, this has not slowed him down and he loves his new food!
