Pet of the Month – Dou

October 8, 2026

Dou is a very sweet and gentle senior kitty who sometimes lodges with us when her family goes away. During her last examination, bloodwork was performed to check her health and prepare for a dental cleaning. Unfortunately, her blood test showed that she had signs of diabetes and we had to postpone her procedure.

Diabetes is a common ailment in senior cats. It is treatable, but treatment requires significant time and financial expense. Dou’s family came in and learned how to administer insulin injections to her and monitor her blood sugar at home. We changed her diet to be diabetic-friendly and she also needed some antibiotics from a urinary tract infection caused by the diabetes.

Due to how early the disease was diagnosed and the diligent care from her owners, after only one month Dou was in diabetic remission and no longer needed insulin! She will always be high risk for becoming diabetic again, so we will need to keep a close watch and continue feeding her a special diet. We are happy to report Dou was also able to have her dental issues addressed after this and is continuing to thrive and live her best life at 11 years young!
