Pet of the Month: Penny

May 1, 2017

Penny is a 5 year old spayed, female, ginger-coloured, domestic, short-haired cat.

She is a very special cat for 2 reasons. First, it is very rare to have a female, ginger-coloured cat as almost all ginger cats are male due to the genetic transmission of the genes that control coat colour. Second she is a very sweet cat who has been on a long medical journey.

She had intermittent vomiting, weight loss, and poor appetite for a period of a few weeks, followed by periods of wellness. After diagnostic testing and supportive care including blood screening, radiographs, intravenous fluid support, and medications, it was determined that she most likely had a gastrointestinal obstruction. An exploratory surgery was performed at Markham Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Sonya Firth during which a foreign body obstruction was found in her small intestine. The object was surgically removed and I am happy to report she has made a full recovery. It was determined that the object was most likely a piece of Croc sandal that was recently found with a piece missing.

It is not known why cats and dogs will eat non-food items, but it is something that can happen and sometimes lodge in the digestive tract causing severe problems if not identified and treated. Thanks to Penny’s observant family realizing something was wrong, we were able to provide her with the testing and treatment she needed. All her friends at Markham Veterinary Clinic are so happy that we were able to help her!
