Pet of the Month – Nabi and Rupert

February 5, 2025

Nabi and Rupert are beautiful domestic medium-hair kitties that came in for a similar problem. Their owners reported they had been visiting the litterbox more frequently but urinating only small amounts. Sometimes, the urine was visibly pinkish in colour.

Both cats seemed quite restless and uncomfortable at home. After performing blood and urine tests, x-rays were recommended for both patients. The results showed that the reason they were so uncomfortable was they each had multiple sharp stones in their bladders (uroliths) which were causing them pain.

This condition in cats can be caused by a variety of factors including diet, activity level, body condition, and whether they drink enough water. It is especially dangerous in male cats like Rupert, since a stone could get stuck in the long narrow urethra, making him unable to urinate at all and requiring emergency medical intervention.

Thankfully, both patients were able to undergo surgery (cystotomy) at Markham Veterinary Clinic quickly to remove the stones from their bladders before they could cause further problems. The cats’ recovery went smoothly and moving forward, they will both be on a prescription diet to help minimize the chances of this happening again.
