Belle is a beautiful 10 year old spayed female Shetland Sheepdog. Her family noticed recently that she seemed to be acting a little less patient with her canine housemates, she was less energetic and was reluctant to play with her ball and toys. They also noticed that she seemed to be acting a bit delicate with chewing her food and treats, always trying to chew with her front teeth. She came in for a physical examination with one of our veterinarians, and was prepared for a comprehensive oral health assessment and therapy by performing some pre-anesthetic blood tests.
During her anesthetized oral examination and studying her dental radiographs that were performed at our clinic, it was determined that 4 of her largest molars had developed advanced periodontal disease and bone loss causing them to be very painful. The only treatment option available to resolve her pain was to surgically remove these teeth. The surgery was carried out and she also had a scaling and polishing performed on the rest of her teeth.
After a brief period using some post -operative pain medication and antibiotics she has healed very well. Now she is back to her usual playful and friendly self. She is enjoying playing ball, chewing her toys and treats and eating her food normally again.
Dental disease can easily go unnoticed. Dental health can make a large impact on the lives of our furry friends. Our goal is for all of our patients to have a mouth free of pain and infection.
